7 Ways to Deal with an Elderly who is Resistant to Receive Care

Elderly, one of the toughest challenges that you may face is resistance to care. When the person is not interested in asking for help, we must do everything we can to foster cooperation.
There are different reasons why some elderly don’t like to accept help. One may have the fear of having to give up privacy, while the other may feel anxious about having to start a new routine. There will also be a deep concern for the cost of care that would strongly convince them not to go for it!

Ask help from the doctor
Most commonly, the first person to discuss this issue with the patient is his medical doctor. It is one of the responsibilities of the doctor to explain to the patient what his care needs are and the importance of seeking help. You may expect the patient to be resistant at first, but you should not stop there. Consider other tips or ways as well to help convince your loved one.

Identify the help needed
It is important to assess the patient’s needs so you can find the kind of help needed. Today, you can find various types of services offered to this type of patient, so it is up to you to decide which among the services is best for him in accordance with his needs.

It is all about the timing
There is something significant with time when it comes to dealing with someone who has a stubborn mind. Choose a perfect time to discuss the matter together – preferably a time when both sides are relaxed. When we are relaxed, we can listen to each other well and can speak our minds.

Consider the person’s preferences
Perhaps one of the reasons why you are not hearing out each other well is because you are not allowing yourself to listen to your loved one’s preferences. You can earn his trust and favor if you take time to know his or her preferences – especially when it comes to the type of service he likes. It does not matter whether or not you can meet all of his needs. What matters the most is you acknowledge those needs, and that you take them into consideration.

Ask help from family members or significant others
If it is taking you longer to convince the patient, the next resort is to approach his family members for help. Identify who the significant others are, and explain to them the reasons for needing care. These people might be able to help you in persuading the patient to accept help.

Don’t give up!
If you care for your patient so much, never give a hint that you are backing out. The first discussion might be rough, but that should not stop you from trying to convince him to accept help. If it did not work the first time, that’s fine! You can give it another try! Maybe next time if you bring it up again, you’ll be successful already!

Keep your loved one involved
We are sure that keeping your loved one involved in decisions like this can change his mind and eventually accept help. You can do this by explaining to the patient the importance and benefits of seeking help and assistance, more so assuring him that it is going to be alright along the way!

There are a lot of different strategies to use when dealing with a loved one who is resistant to care. However, make sure that the strategies you use are appropriate to the health condition of the patient.
